I will be very interested to see how you handle this situation with your child's teacher as a former educator. I, too, have read "The Homework Myth" and believe every teacher needs to read it. Can you pass it along to your child's teacher? It may impact her as greatly as it has impacted the two of us. It really is a must read.

Yes, I recognize that speeches are that way by design, but it doesn't much quench my thirst for more detail, however. And given multiple opportunities (in which he has basically given the same speech), Obama has yet to get really specific. I have read his "detailed" plan, which is still quite vague when you consider implementation, but is really out of touch with the magnitude and multitude of problems in school today.

There are really two issues:
1) single sign-on, which is basically being able to use the same "identity" wherever you go and not have to have a different account name and password wherever you go. Keep in mind that if you use the same identity (account name) on many different web sites then it is a terrible idea to have to enter your password into each and every web site. OpenID is a great solution that doesn't require you to enter a password into every random site you happen upon. The problem is that OpenID is still susceptible to phishing attacks where a web site pretends to be your own OpenID authentication site. This brings us to...

2) Secure authentication. Even if you can use the same identity on many different sites and (potentially non-web) services, you still need a way to prove that you are who you claim to be. The most completely secure way to do this is by using a public/private key system. Unless your private key is on a card or some other secure device it will never be truly safe.

The external card that contains your private key is definitely the way to go, but we need to make these cards integrate with computers and phones and any other device that we might use to access the net. If a phone is secure enough, it could contain your private key without an external card. If your phone could communicate securely with your computer you might even be able to use your phone instead of a separate card, but just don't lose it!

I agree that the "more money for teachers" thing from his speech is pretty vague and, by itself, not very helpful (other than to win support from teacher's unions).

I think his web site lays out the details pretty well. It could always be better, obviously, but it presents a pretty clear picture of his priorities with respect to improving education.

The whole idea of texting the announcement to the database of folks that signed up was brilliant! Not to mention using the database to solicit votes and money as the election draws near.

However, word starting leaking out or the press started figuring it out and I think the Obama camp panicked. In their panic, they did not follow through on the original promise to text the ones that signed up.

Bad move in my opinion...

Enjoyed your post. I read it after first reading your post on social media. It made me think that without all the social media and the www, many of us probably would never have heard of Randy.

I ditto Steve's comment about your expressing very well some of the feelings that I (and others) have been feeling. I downloaded Alice the day after Randy died and am contemplating introducing it to kids at school in September.
